This week, the Sign Artist team customized the entrance to Grant Consulting Group’s Chicago office with precision cut lettering and 3M frosted privacy film. The graphics provide brand identity. Privacy film is a great choice for buildings with interior windows because it looks like etched glass. Different degrees of frosted glass are available. It’s a professional look for visitors, and provides privacy and light to employees.

United Displaycraft is a subsidiary of parent company Great Northern Instore (GNI). GNI is an expert at designing and building custom retail displays. This includes everything from Gatorade to Bridgestone tires. Each item we see in a store has a carefully engineered display to provide maximum visibility and key information about the product. Great Northern subsidiaries include those specializing in metal fabrication, wood crafting and high resolution printing. When it was time to update the signage, Great Northern Instore engaged Sign Artist Inc. to transform their branding into a highly visible set of signs along the busy thoroughfare north of O’Hare International Airport. Carefully matched to the corporation’s color standard, the bright, highly weather resistant acrylic panels are mounted onto the building using metal studs tightly lodged into the facade with silicone adhesive. The sign will withstand the harsh northern winters and blazing summer heat.
Custom signs from Sign Artist will bring an extra flare to your celebration! The mother of the groom wanted a bright Chicago sign under which photos of family could be memorialized. Chicago’s Bridgeport Art Center was the venue, a great industrial-chic space from the world-class city’s past. To achieve the right effect, designer Erin Bartholomew worked with the family to create a sign that harmonized with the historical and artistic nature of the Skyline Loft. The sign was built with an internal frame to allow it to hang safely. Bright LED lighting brings the translucent sign face to life. A dimmer allows the photographer to adjust the brightness for optimal photos. 3M film allowed us to block the light in the dark areas, while it shone freely through the jewel-like embellishments of the Chicago Theater-inspired design.
ND Paper is a subsidiary of global paper product manufacturer Nine Dragons Paper, a large manufacturer in Asia. ND Paper is an environmentally-friendly company that produces high-quality packaging materials. The company operates mills in Maine, Wisconsin, and West Virginia that produce more than 1.2 million short tons of pulp & paper annually. Many of their products are created from recycled materials.
ND Paper is proud of their 1,400 dedicated employees. To celebrate the strong sense of community that inspires their corporation, ND Paper engaged Sign Artist to create and install a number of galleries in their Oak Brook Terrace, IL US headquarters.
These include 10 acrylic panels with corporate branding and messages. Featured among them is a world map with LED back-lighting to showcase the many global locations of the company. A space known as the “Bullpen” is both an area to stimulate conversation and to salute the history and environmental awareness of ND Paper. Over 20 photographs illustrate images of the people and places where forests grow, the products are made and newly-planted trees replenish natural resources.

Stuart always wanted his own business, and in summer 2019 the dream came to fruition. Dini’s Ice Cream in Roselle, IL opened in July serving the best-directly from Wisconsin cows. A keystone of his advertising strategy is an illuminated sign. It’s visible from several hundred feet while driving on Irving Park Road. It features his kitten, Dini and his new logo. Sign Artist is proud to promote this excellent local business with a new channel letter sign! Visit Dini’s at 346 East Irving Park Rd (IL-19) in Roselle.
The law firm of Jonathan Merel wanted to enhance the atmosphere in their suite of offices in Chicago’s Prudential Plaza. An expanse of wall called for graphics in addition to artwork. Sign Artist installed this three-dimensional sign to satisfy the need. It has a brushed aluminum finish that contrasts nicely with the rich brown background. In addition, these finishes provide a sheen that reflects sophistication and professionalism. Do you have an empty feeling somewhere in your office? Add excitement with a dimensional wall sign. All of us at Sign Artist play a Where’s Waldo? game of sorts. We spot problematic signs wherever we go! We applaud this dry cleaner in Chicagoland for posting positively and taking the “high road.” He obviously takes a lot of pride in his signs, because the message changes often.
However, we also wonder if the sturdy Spring winds have whisked a couple letters to another county!
Stringing letters manually to a gigantic sign board is one way of getting a message across, and we’ve happily provided changeable letter signs to area clients. But a more modern approach, and one that can be easily programmed with the touch of a finger on a screen, is LED lighting.
LEDsigns give an updated look, and have exterior and interior uses galore, from way finding, directory and even sports arena signage, to menu and score boards. and open/closed signs.
Let us know if you’d like to update your look, make lettering legible and secure, and simplify maintenance, with a programmableLED sign. We’d be happy to give you a quote for your specific need and application.
People heading up any enterprise, often pour hours into strategic plans, employee and client interactions, but sometimes miss the obvious — planning for a stunning sign that will turn heads and generate buzz and business. Whether you’re shopping for a new dentist or realtor, a clothing boutique or condo, would you be more willing to try the establishment that features a yellowing, half-lit sign announcing its services…or a fresh sign with all letters intact? Do you enjoy seeing more than plain signage? A well-designed image or two, placed strategically, can make any sign more striking.
We’ve had a brutal winter in many parts of the U.S…and certainly in Chicagoland! Now is a great time to see if your shop, residential or corporate signage needs a face lift. We’ve already seen an uptick in business at Sign Artist, as customers are asking for new directory sign panels, banners for temporary branding until storefront build outs are complete, vinyl wraps to turn vans into moving billboards, and new wall murals to brighten a shop interior.
If you have a dream for how to rev up the interior or exterior of your business, contact us! You may be amazed at the tremendous variety of materials available that can move your project forward. Also, we have a fine artist on staff, who has a wonderful gift for grasping clients’ visions and helping to make them a reality.

Sign Artist’s crew was busily installing a 15-foot pylon sign in a Western Suburb of Chicago, when a city official strode up to check our code compliability. Had the crew obtained proper permits to revamp the sign? When the official saw our paperwork, all signed and sealed at city hall, he smiled and joined us for a photo.
Does code compliance matter? Yes, and many a business owner has discovered this the hard way. On one recent job, Sign Artist was asked to remove a beautiful 10-foot-wide channel letter sign, because the previous sign company had not followed city codes in its installation. The improper sign looked great on the store front, but was not compatible with other storefront signs in the complex, so had to go. Sign Artist took care of removal of the old sign, and design and installation — and code compliant paperwork — for the new sign.
What’s involved in obtaining proper paperwork from city hall? Owners either file for permits themselves, or hire Sign Artist to do the leg and phone work, in sending dimensional and other information, and photos of the projected sign, to appropriate staff at city offices. The process of obtaining permits does require certain fees and can take some time, even several weeks or more. If a business owner wants his or her sign installed ASAP, then the code and permitting issues should be addressed efficiently, or crew and owner will face delays in the install.
Make everyone happy — dot every “i” and cross every “t,” regarding city permits! Give Sign Artist a call for any questions about the process, and we’ll smooth the way for you, ensuring that your sign will make you — and your city officials — smile.
Let Sign Artist do the legwork in obtaining proper exterior sign permits!
Sign Artist met with half of its 320-plus sister sign companies at the 2019 Sign World Convention at Gaylord Opryland Hotel in Nashville, March 22-24, 2019. Our crew joined the gathering of sign company owners, designers, installers and vendors.
Highlights included observing cutting-edge techniques in installing the newest 3M substrates, demonstrations of a high-grade measuring tool called Spike, and group and private sessions with management experts.
Sign Artist designer Erin, said she appreciated “learning about other designers’ processes” from across North America, and getting refreshers on helpful Illustrator shortcuts.
The Sign Artist crew delved into production and installation techniques of top sign makers, including one sign company owner who involved our crew in hands-on demonstrations. This car wrapper for the “stars,” serves on movie sets in Burbank, California.
Our crew spotted a wild variety of signs at every turn in Nashville, from small scale to monumental. Whether turn-of-the-century ads for jalopies or 21st-Century LED signs, artistry and loving care showed in the design of many.
As Sign World owners met for the sessions and spent time comparing notes, one thing was clear: Sign Artist’s commitment to its clients to visit large-scale sign environments to gauge installs, is invaluable to making us a top-ranked sign company. One example, is Sign Artist’s install of the Elmhurst Auto Care pylon sign on North Avenue in Elmhurst, which required site visits to properly plan for the production and install of the sign. Sign World Convention speakers and company owners from across North America agree, that this level of service is vital in creating top signage.
Sign Artist Inc. recently installed two dimensional letter signs at the University of Illinois at Chicago. The wall signs had brushed aluminum surfaces on acrylic backing with sides painted to match the letter faces. Each sign was prepared to exact specifications to accurately reflect the university’s branding. The signs are mounted on two different surfaces; one is wood with a high-gloss finish, the other is a painted concrete wall. Sign Artist Inc. is experienced with mounting letters on a variety of surfaces. Contact us for your next business or education sign and we’ll discuss the options that make your sign reflect the image that you desire. We’ll also advise you as to the optimal mounting so your sign will last for years and still look great.

LED signs and electronic message centers (EMC) are an investment in your business that pays dividends. The Small Business Administration performed research on the effect of updating business signs and found that sales increased by a minimum of 15% after a new sign was installed.
An EMC requires a larger investment than a static sign, yet it is best to consider the impact on your business’ growth. If you have sales of $10,000/month and you install an electronic sign, that means your revenue could increase by a minimum of $1,500/month. If you lease an EMC for $500/month, you’re still increasing gross income by $1,000.
In addition to increasing sales, electronic message centers qualify for a tax deduction. This helps to reduce your tax burden at the same time that you improve sales.
Other benefits to installing EMCs include the lower cost of making thousands of advertising impressions on potential customers in a day than other types of ads. Many of the people that pass your sign see it every day, thereby increasing the probability that the next time they need your service, you will be on their list of who they talk to.
Not only can you reduce other costly advertising, you have the opportunity to display multiple messages during the time that one drives past the sign. You inform potential customers about special offers, business hours and new products. Drivers pay attention to your sign because it stands out among all of the other signs on the parkway. Passersby read your sign from a greater distance and that means they can receive more information about your services. They’ll have a greater chance of remembering your business!
